The two ounces are different
A troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams. An ordinary, avoirdupois ounce is 28.349523125 grams. One troy ounce therefore weighs 9.7143% more than one ordinary ounce.
The price mistake to avoid
If your scale shows 1 ordinary ounce and you value it as 1 troy ounce, your metal-value estimate is 9.7143% too high. If you treat 1 troy ounce as 28.349523125 grams, the estimate is 8.8542% too low. The percentages differ because the starting weights differ.
Check the scale manual when “oz” is ambiguous. Selecting grams avoids that ambiguity. A converter cannot correct a scale that has not been calibrated or identify non-gold parts.

Converted weight = starting weight × starting grams factor ÷ destination grams factor
The tool calculates with the full factors above and rounds displayed results to eight decimal places. Very small positive results use scientific notation. Extra digits describe the conversion; they do not improve your scale's accuracy.
Worked example of a 10 dwt chain
Multiply 10 by 1.55517384 to get 15.5517384 grams. Divide by 31.1034768 to get 0.5 troy ounces. The same chain weighs about 0.54857143 ordinary ounces.
That is the whole item's weight. To estimate its gold value, first account for stones or other non-gold material, then apply the alloy's purity. Use the gold chain value calculator for those deductions or the gold calculator to value several pieces.
Questions about gold weight
Does 14K gold need a different conversion?
No. A gram is the same mass at every karat. Purity affects how much of that mass is gold, so apply it separately when calculating melt value.
Is dwt the same as a gram?
No. A pennyweight is 1.55517384 grams. If a buyer quotes per dwt, convert your weight before multiplying by that quote.
Does this convert fluid ounces?
No. Fluid ounces measure volume. Choose a mass unit on your scale; a volume reading cannot be converted to gold weight without additional information.
