What 24K Gold is, and where you see it
24K is pure gold: 99.9% (999) or 99.99% (9999). You see it in investment bars from refiners and in bullion coins such as the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf, the American Gold Buffalo and the Austrian Philharmonic.
Hallmark stamps. 24K, 999 or 9999. A stamp is a claim by the maker, not a test. If a piece has no stamp, ask the buyer to test it in front of you.
How it wears. Pure gold is very soft. It dents and scratches with normal wear, so most 24K is held as bars and coins, not worn.
When you sell. Bars and coins from known refiners and mints usually sell much closer to melt than jewelry does, because the buyer can resell them without refining. Keep the original packaging or assay card if you have it.
Worked example. a 31.10 g 24K Gold 1 troy ounce bar holds 31.07 g of pure gold. At today's spot of $4,078.20/troy oz that is $4074.12 of melt value. An offer of 80% of melt would be $3259.30. See also gold bar value.
Which ounce did they mean
Gold is priced in troy ounces. Kitchen and postal scales read avoirdupois ounces. They are not the same weight, so "an ounce of 24K Gold" has two different correct answers and the gap is real money.

The difference is $360.73 on one ounce of 24K Gold, because a troy ounce is 9.71% heavier. Both gram figures are exact by definition and are printed in NIST Handbook 44 Appendix C. If a buyer quotes you "per ounce", ask which ounce before you agree a price.
