What 14K Gold is, and where you see it
14K is the most common karat in jewelry sold in the United States, in engagement and wedding bands, chains, earrings and most mid-priced pieces. The 585 stamp is the European way to mark the same alloy. In the trade, 14KP is read as "14 karat plumb": a seller's claim that the gold is not below 14 karat. The P is trade usage, not a legal mark.
Hallmark stamps. 14K, 14KT, 585 or 14KP. A stamp is a claim by the maker, not a test. If a piece has no stamp, ask the buyer to test it in front of you.
How it wears. At 58.5% gold, 14K holds stones well and resists everyday wear, which is why jewelers use it for rings that are worn daily. White 14K is usually rhodium plated; the plating does not change the gold content.
When you sell. 14K is the karat buyers see most, so quotes are easy to compare. Separate 14K from 10K and 18K before you weigh, because a mixed pile is often priced at the lowest karat in it.

Which ounce did they mean
Gold is priced in troy ounces. Kitchen and postal scales read avoirdupois ounces. They are not the same weight, so "an ounce of 14K Gold" has two different correct answers and the gap is real money.

The difference is $211.24 on one ounce of 14K Gold, because a troy ounce is 9.71% heavier. Both gram figures are exact by definition and are printed in NIST Handbook 44 Appendix C. If a buyer quotes you "per ounce", ask which ounce before you agree a price.
